FYVIE CASTLE
An imposing 800-year-old fortress, with Raeburn portraits on the walls and wildfowl in the loch, this magnificent fortress in the heart of Aberdeenshire is a sterling example of Scottish Baronial architecture. Inside, the rooms are filled with antiquities, armour and lavish oil paintings. Out in the grounds the grandeur continues, with a picturesque lake and an unusual glass-roofed racquets court.
Ghosts, legends and folklore are all woven into the tapestry of Fyvie’s 800-year-old history. But stories aside, we do know William the Lion was at Fyvie around 1214 and later Robert the Bruce and Charles I were among its royal guests.
Everywhere you look in Fyvie Castle you’re met with fascinating collections of arms and armour, elaborate furniture, delicate porcelains and impressive tapestries. But Fyvie’s charms also spread into the otherworldly; for Fyvie is ‘blessed’ with two curses and a resident ghost.
One curse pertains to a sealed medieval dungeon – if an intruder entered, they would be killed and their wife would be blinded. The ‘Curse of the Weeping Stones’ is supposed to explain the death of every eldest son in the castle’s families over the past 600 years – perhaps the reason why the castle has changed hands so often? Until the three stones are discovered and removed, the curse is said to hold. The whereabouts of only one is known: it’s on display in the Charter Room.
Fyvie Castle is the ultimate fairytale venue for civil, religious and humanist wedding ceremonies. Adorned with masterpieces by Raeburn, Gainsborough and Batoni, the castle’s elegant gallery and interconnecting drawing room provide a glorious setting for drinks receptions, ceremonies and wedding breakfasts.
From the castle, a short stroll through the grounds leads to the racquets court, a glass-roofed pavilion with a sprung dance floor, perfect for ceilidhs and evening receptions. For larger weddings, you can hire a marquee to be erected on the south lawn, with the castle providing a spectacular backdrop, particularly when floodlit in the evening.
It almost goes without saying that the opportunities for stunning wedding photography are endless!

ARDOE HOUSE HOTEL
A glittering, fairytale celebration is Ardoe House Hotel & Spa, a 19th-century baronial mansion just outside Aberdeen. The turreted house was actually modelled on Balmoral, and events coordinator Eilidh Findlay tells us that its 30 acres of grounds provide an “excellent backdrop” for photographs and mingling. “Ardoe is a wonderful blend of regal and modern,” she says. “Our mansion house has an elegant, regal atmosphere, but as you move through to the function rooms and bedrooms the decor becomes more modern.”
To channel a contemporary feel to complement the traditional setting, she suggests looking at recent royal weddings for inspiration. Ardoe House Hotel and Spa combines modernity and tradition for a unique wedding experience.
Whether you choose to celebrate within the impressive walls or out on the glorious lawns, the setting is sure to be perfect. The hotel is licensed to hold civil ceremonies in a number of elegant function suites, each individually decorated with their own charm and character.
Located just 3 miles from Aberdeen City Centre, Ardoe House Hotel and Spa is a stunning 19th century baronial mansion set in 30 acres of spectacular grounds. The original house was built incorporating many design features inspired by Balmoral Castle, with distinctive pointed turrets.
Inside, they still have original wood carvings, mosaic flooring and stained glass with the Ogston Family Coat of Arms, to remind us of the original occupants.
